With a recorded history spanning 3400 years, Athens is one of the world’s oldest cities, widely referred to as the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy. The heritage of the classical era is still evident in the city, represented by a number of ancient monuments and works of art, the most famous of all being the Parthenon on the Acropolis. Projecting Athens’ long history across the centuries, the city also retains a vast variety of Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman monuments
While our visits will be brief, the time is sufficient to absorb the quintessence, both the picturesque surface and the historic depth, of each location. There are cascades of white-washed houses, narrow streets, and windmills, all contrasting with the deep blue sea. There are also the vestiges of the early saints of Christendom, as well as palaces and fortifications of several layers of civilization.
When not sipping in open-air cafés, exploring glittering boutiques, or savoring local dishes, travel is provided by the first-class cruise ship Aquamarine. Fully equipped with cruise services, the Aquamarine has two dining rooms, bars and disco, entertainment lounge, casino, fitness center, swimming pool, sauna, massage, and stateroom amenities. top ^ Athens and Jewels of Aegean Cruise Trip DatesFriday 3 to Friday 10 September 2010 (includes Labor Day) Friday 10 to Friday 17 September 2010 Also possible other dates in August with increased airfare. top ^ Trip Itinerary
